Most gamblers have heard about the world series of poker - one of the famous casino tournaments.  Strategy for poker tournaments is a bit different than playing with real money. When I say real money, I mean that a 100 chip is actually worth 100 dollars, and can be cashed in at anytime. In these tournaments, the value of the chip only matters in relation to the amount that others have, and they cannot be cashed in at all.

Poker tournaments start off with each card player receiving the same amount of chips. For example, you may have to pay 40 dollars to play in the tournament, for which you will receive 1,000 chips. The game continues until one person has every single chip.

When you play a regular table poker game, you can fold your hands for a long time and play only your better cards. In these tournaments, the blinds will continue to rise, forcing you to make a play. This is what makes tournament strategy very different.

Also, these tournaments are all about surviving as long as you can. If you throw away a couple of mediocre hands, and last a long time, then you will be much better off. Of course you want to try and accumulate as many chips as possible, but you need to let the small fish go to try and catch the big ones.
